Rock: The Basics tells the story of rock rock music and roll, from its birth in the conservative'50s through its blossoming through the turbulent'60s, the mellow'70s, the disco rock music and punk revolutions, the'80s rock music and grunge, rock music and the rise of hip hop culture in the'90s through today. Beginning at the end of World War II, the author traces rock's musical roots to a variety of styles, rock music and also shows how political rock music and social developments laid the groundwork for the blossoming of a new, teen culture. The early'60s saw a new optimism with a change to a younger, more energetic leadership in Washington, but also saw the end of the first great rock era. Yet, waiting in the wings was a tidal wave of new energy that would transform the music industry: The British Invasion. Groups like the Beatles rock music and Rolling Stones would reinvigorate the music by reintroducing the R&B sounds that had propelled Presley's early career. Plus, they showed how rock as a form could mature rock music and complement the rapidly changing social picture. Civil Wars rock music and the antiwar movement were propelled by the sounds of the rock revolution. Such a period of fervent creativity could not go on forever, rock music and through much of the following decades rock music--and the performers who make it--have tried to deal with its legacy, while continuing to explore the outer edges of the style. From disco rock music and punk to grunge rock music and hip hop, new styles have evolved, each trying to carry the burden of rock's history as well as celebrate its legacy. Students listening to rock today are unlikely to know the full history of the music, its performers, or the social rock music and cultural trends that shaped it.
